Grahamstown star trails

I've been out from home to take night pictures around Grahamstown three times recently when the cloud (preferably no clouds) and wind (preferably no wind or light winds) forecasts were favourable.  The moon isn't such a problem as you can use the moonlight to paint the foreground of your picture.  Night photos have been a dominant... Nordic nights 3: some autumn star trails in Sweden

As well as the northern lights I was able to take some lovely pictures of the stars wheeling across the night skies when I was in Sweden.  Hundby is a good place to do this as it is right out in the countryside with very few city lights anywhere near.  The first picture is a... Continue Reading →

Nordic nights and northern lights 2: Kvaløya 26/10/2015

My first day in Tromsø it started to snow - they told me it was the first fall of winter.  Whilst it was still daylight I went hiking to the cable-car station through the birch forest and up above the tree line.  There was no point going on to the summit beyond as everything was... Nordic nights and northern lights: Tromsø harbour 29/10/2015

The last night of my brief time in Norway was very clear and cold.  I spent a lot of it on the pier that runs right out into Tromsø harbour.  It was an ideal spot for night photography as it wasn't too icy (so there was little chance of falling into the frigid ocean!) and... Continue Reading →

Revontulet brings the northern lights to Turku

Here is a story I wrote for our children and grand-children. A modern day fairy tale inspired by the magical northern lights I saw in Turku last week and the mythical story of Revontulet. The northern lights are the fox fires of the far north: snows and frost thrown high up by the fox's fiery... Continue Reading →

Three elderly ladies and six pictures

I have just time enough to visit the three elderly ladies when travelling to work on public transport. There's a short bus connection at Uddevalla Kampenhoff from getting off the No 5 from Äsperöd and changing to the mainline 860 for Trollhättan. I can walk across to the river where it runs past the Bohuslän... Continue Reading →

Turku textures

I took a short walk into town today, for lunch with my colleague Johanna at Turku's Saluhallen.  A late morning in early October brought out plenty of interesting sights as I went down the street below Villa Hortus, then across the cathedral square and along the river bank. First I went past an abandoned dinner party... Night clouds and star trails

Last night the good aurora forecast tempted me out with my camera but I ended up coming back with pictures of night clouds and star trails.  I headed up to a local viewpoint in the forests above Äsperöd with camera, tripod, warm clothes, flask of coffee and a sandwich to wait and see if the... The cold Karoo leaves its mark

Without doubt the Karoo is cold in the winter months. We are just back from field work based at Ganora Guest Farm, New Bethesda and it was gray and cloudy and cold.  I managed to capture the grainy chill in these pictures: particularly in the skies towering over the gravel roads twisting through the big... Makana’s Kop from Sunnyside

Makana's Kop dominates the skyline over the township when you are down in the bowl where Grahamstown lies.  There's a prominent straggle of fir trees on its crown and the oldest townships of Fingo and Tantyi run down towards you as you look up to it from the city centre. This sunset picture's taken from above city...
