After the summer storm: Feb 1 2014

It's been really hot this summer.  Today it was 37 degrees.  Our swimming pool has been getting lower with all the evaporation and swimming so after lunch I decided to fill it with some of the rain water from our new tanks …. there was also the thought that if I did use up our... Summer fun

Christmas is upon us - time for some summer fun!  Our new pool area is getting lots of use at the moment: the weather's been lovely and we have a great forecast for the Christmas braai - 28 degrees. Here's some pictures from the last few days of holiday time …. Jeannie, Steve and Luke... Continue Reading →

Ice Halo over Rhodes University

Yesterday there was a very clear ice halo above Rhodes University.  I was busy working in the Geography Department when just after 9.00 Ian Meiklejohn called me out of the office to come and look.  After a quick glance I dashed back in for my trusty Samsung Duos phone to grab a few pictures of... No need to travel 2 ….

At this time of year I make the 15 minute walk to my First Year classes at dawn and usually don't get back until just after sunset. So I get to see some lovely buildings and vegetation whilst the light is at its best.  There's no time for my big camera but the lens on... Continue Reading →

No need to travel …. one Grahamstown evening

There really is no need to travel.  A 90 minute walk up Mountain Drive this evening showed that.  It was cool (and got cooler once the sun was gone and the moon was up) clear and still.  Just right for a few pictures of my favourite subjects.

Back to Featherstone Kloof for the flowers

We went back to Featherstone Kloof yesterday to see the King Proteas and all the other winter flowers.  We have had a warm sunny spell lately and so lots of flowers are blossoming in the grasslands and fynbos.  It was a real mix.  There's this year's Proteas with the most amazing coral pink shades, the... The Round of Featherstone Kloof

This is our favourite weekend walk.  Direct from the front door is a 14 km hike that starts by crossing the Grahamstown bypass and then goes up over the grasslands of Mountain Drive before dropping down 'heartbreak hill' and into Featherstone Kloof . Then it's along the valley, across the stream, through some woodland and... Continue Reading →

Midwinter sunset: red sky at night = festinos delight?

I went out to take pictures of the large full moon rising tonight - no success with those - but there was a spectacular sunset to soak up.  Grahamstown seems to specialise in midwinter sunsets but you have to be quick as the play of light alters very rapidly.  These two pictures were taken only... Luke at play: sunny days

I doubt that I will ever take a better set of pictures of Luke in such a small space of time: first in the pool and then on the stoep with the rocking horse. It was in early March on a lovely hot day. Thanks to Jeannie, who has asked before, and Julia Possener (who said... Continue Reading →

Psychedelic Creeper

I mentioned in my last post that I often use the digital filter function on my Pentax to take what are essentially black and white photographs but leaving highlights of red.  When we got back from our walk around Mountain Drive today I thought I would try something a little more complex and take black...
