Here's the large picture that's drawn the crowds and the comments at my #NAF19 exhibition 'Symmetry'. I did a photo shoot last year of the Fountain Court at the 1820 Settlers National Monument because it's my favourite part of the building. The title picture's taken as if you were lying on your back looking up to the skylight... Continue Reading →
The N2 by Night – Festinos’ delight?
The N2's not an easy road and I don't think many festinos' would think it's a delight: but most people will come to #NAF18 along it. Whether from Port Elizabeth or King William's Town it snakes its way across a whole sequence of deep valleys. I just love the names of the rivers. On the... Continue Reading →
Starting off with a flash and a bang – 55 days to go to #NAF18
This month certainly started with a bang - we had a spectacular storm last night that's given me another picture for #NAF18. I shall add it to the three night pictures in the Grahamstown Series I've already printed for Metamorphosis. You get such cool colours and effects in night photographs whether it's a moon rise, car... Continue Reading →
More metal – 71 days to #NAF18
We collected another eight metal prints from Orms Print Room in Cape Town last week. They're going to be showcased in Metamorphosis, my fringe exhibition at the Johan Carinus Art Centre during the National Arts Festival 2018. The four monochrome prints are pictured here. They're unusual because they don't have any white. Instead the brushed aluminium... Continue Reading →
Metamorphosis – 81 days until exhibition opening
Metamorphosis is my theme for this years's exhibition on the Arts Festival Fringe at the Johan Carinus Art Centre. I've got 50+ images and more than 40 are new so with less than three months before opening I'm in constant communication with printers in Cape Town (Orms Print Room) and Port Elizabeth (Walker Digital). I'm... Continue Reading →
The Hogsback Series: viewing at Wild Fox Hill Eco-Cabin
This last weekend we hung 14 of the pictures from my Hogsback Series at the Wild Fox Hill Eco-Cabin. You can see the full series of 17 images (with prices and full descriptions) beneath the slideshow. They are printed on brushed aluminium Dibond by Orms Print Room which gives them great impact. At the end of June... Continue Reading →
Grahamstown in Black and White
It's an unusual place - Grahamstown - located in a basin at the headwaters of the Kowie river. The poor black population in the eastern townships look across to the middle class suburbs on the other side of the valley. There are not many South African cities where black and white are so closely juxtaposed.... Continue Reading →
Trees – a picture and two poems
We will be missing two Poetry at Reddits occasions whilst we are away in Sweden: my contributions are here though. There are two of WS Merwin’s poems and one of my pictures of Hogback’s trees. All inspired by Beth Moon’s special book Ancient Trees: Portraits of Time - thank you Kate for the wonderful gift.... Continue Reading →
Autumn harmonies
We've been having lovely autumn weather with clear air, blue skies and low angle light that brings out all the changing colours. I've tried to capture this in these images and combined them into one pattern of autumn harmony. Going clockwise from the top right the inspiration was a bare tree in front of the... The Addo elephant – an inspirational coincidence
Last week we spent a day at Addo Elephant National Park and, just as we were leaving at sunset, we saw a lone bull elephant striding up over the horizon. The misty Suurberg ridges rising up beyond the Sundays River valley made a lovely dramatic backdrop to his silhouette. I got to wondering what would... Continue Reading →
