The archipelago is one of the delights in Western Sweden - especially on a warm sunny day in early September. Having a regional travel pass is also a great thing. It means that you can catch the local bus in Uddevalla to the railway, then catch a train north up to Strömstad and then the... Continue Reading →
No need to travel 2 ….
At this time of year I make the 15 minute walk to my First Year classes at dawn and usually don't get back until just after sunset. So I get to see some lovely buildings and vegetation whilst the light is at its best. There's no time for my big camera but the lens on... Continue Reading →
Two haiku: for summer and winter
It's been one of the warmest, sunniest winter Julys that I can remember in the Eastern Cape. Which perhaps inspired these two haiku: Hail stones on a hot zinc roof The young lovers kiss Summer storm ........... On the bay window of old mens' smiles A woodpecker taps Winter sun Maybe one day I'll come... Continue Reading →
No need to travel …. one Grahamstown evening
There really is no need to travel. A 90 minute walk up Mountain Drive this evening showed that. It was cool (and got cooler once the sun was gone and the moon was up) clear and still. Just right for a few pictures of my favourite subjects.
Addo Elephant Park: two eyes, a tusk and a yawning lion
Yesterday I drove down to Port Elizabeth to collect Kate at the airport with the thought of an afternoon game drive through Addo Elephant Park on the way home to Grahamstown. We have a SA National Parks Wild Card subscription which gives you free entry for a year and so it's a real incentive to get into... Continue Reading →
Back to Featherstone Kloof for the flowers
We went back to Featherstone Kloof yesterday to see the King Proteas and all the other winter flowers. We have had a warm sunny spell lately and so lots of flowers are blossoming in the grasslands and fynbos. It was a real mix. There's this year's Proteas with the most amazing coral pink shades, the... Continue Reading →
The Round of Featherstone Kloof
This is our favourite weekend walk. Direct from the front door is a 14 km hike that starts by crossing the Grahamstown bypass and then goes up over the grasslands of Mountain Drive before dropping down 'heartbreak hill' and into Featherstone Kloof . Then it's along the valley, across the stream, through some woodland and... Continue Reading →
Midwinter sunset: red sky at night = festinos delight?
I went out to take pictures of the large full moon rising tonight - no success with those - but there was a spectacular sunset to soak up. Grahamstown seems to specialise in midwinter sunsets but you have to be quick as the play of light alters very rapidly. These two pictures were taken only... Continue Reading →
Midsummer/midwinter bouquet of flowers
It's the shortest day today (for us in the southern hemisphere) and distinctly warm here in Grahamstown (+25 forecast for this afternoon). Time for a bouquet of flowers to celebrate the turn of the seasons. These flower pictures were all taken during our nine weeks in the Nordic region and England.
Spring flowers in June
As we went from Sweden, England and Scotland to Iceland we pursued the coldest Spring in 50 years northwards. So we were still seeing the lovely Spring flowers well into the middle of June! Here's a selection from Iceland. My memories of Iceland will always include seeing the thousands upon thousands of dandelions, marsh marigolds... Continue Reading →
